Green Moment and what is next

GREEN MOMENT is a set of cards containing open-ended questions that encourage participants to discuss important topics related to environmental protection, ecology and sustainable lifestyles – both at work and in everyday life. The versatility of GREEN MOMENT questions makes the game suitable for all employees, regardless of their industry.

The questions included in the GREEN MOMENT set motivate participants to reflect on their everyday choices, encourage them to share good practices, and support the development of an eco-friendly culture within the team. The questions cover topics such as waste sorting, energy saving, water saving, use of public transport, and conscious consumer choices. A significant number of questions relate to environmental protection in the workplace.

How to use Green Moment cards? – Here are our ideas for you.

Scenario 1: Start the training with Green Moment

Start your health and safety training by using Green Moment cards – and show your employees that caring for the environment is a value in your company. Have each participant pick 1 card at random. Then give the participants a moment to formulate their answers. Finally, ask the participants to introduce themselves, read the Green Moment (GM) question aloud and give their answer. Allow for discussion, ask follow-up questions, and allow additional questions from other training participants to explore the question in more depth.

TIP: You do not need to use the entire deck of GM cards for this exercise – choose the questions that best suit your group (e.g. new employees). If an employee feels uncomfortable with a question, allow them to exchange it for another one.

Scenario 2: Use Green Moment after the lunch break during training

After the lunch break during a full-day training session, the participants’ energy levels naturally drop. This is when you should reach for the Green Moment cards. Prepare the cards (questions) that are best suited for discussion in teams. Divide the training participants into teams of 3-4 people and seat them in different places in the room. Hand out the cards to the teams and give them 5-7 minutes to discuss and develop a common position. Then discuss each card in the forum. Let the first team read the question and discuss their answer. Then encourage the other training participants to share their opinions on the topic, etc.

TIP 1: To increase the effectiveness of this exercise, when the questions are discussed/summarised in the forum, place their content on separate PowerPoint slides. It will be much easier for your training participants to refer to the question when it is visible on a large screen.

TIP 2: If you have more time, after the lunch break you can use GM as described in ‘Scenario 1’.

Scenario 3: Green Moment during environmental protection training – brainstorming

Divide the training participants into teams of 3–4 people. For this exercise, use only cards from the Green Moment deck from the ‘My Workplace’ category – the questions in this section are great for inspiring brainstorming.

Rules for the exercise:

  • each team receives: 1 Green Moment card, markers and a flipchart sheet,
  • group work time: 15–20 minutes,
  • summary in front of the group: each group presents its ideas (max. 3 minutes).

Scenario 4: Walking Green Moments

Here is another idea on how to use GM during training, e.g. after a lunch break, when the trainees’ energy levels drop or you want them to get to know each other better. Here are the steps:

  • Ask all training participants to stand up.
  • Have each training participant draw 1 GM card (adapt the questions to the group).
  • Display a large online stopwatch on the projector and set the time to 2 min/2.5 min (counting down).
  • Within the set time (point 3), each participant finds a conversation partner and they read the questions to each other and answer them.
  • When the set time (point 3) is up, the stopwatch bell rings.
  • The participants exchange cards and each of them looks for another conversation partner. We start the stopwatch again.
  • The game can be repeated several times. The optimal number of repetitions is 4-6 times.

TIP: This use of GM will work well not only during health and safety training, but also during training in integration and communication or leadership in safety.

Scenario 5: Green Moment at a daily production meeting

If your workplace holds daily production and/or management meetings, one of the topics discussed is surely environmental protection (or perhaps you are forgetting about it?). If there is no health and safety/environmental protection topic to discuss during the daily meeting (e.g. accident at work, near miss, environmental incident), draw one Green Moment card. Spend 2-3 minutes discussing the card as a team.

TIP: Instead of discussing the GM card as a team, only one selected person can draw the card and give their answer and share their opinion on the topic.

Scenario 6: Green Moment in a company competition

Announce a mini eco-competition among employees. Every day (e.g. for a week), publish one question from the Green Moment cards on the company intranet, Teams/Slack group or notice board. Employees submit their answers, and the best (most creative, practical, inspiring) are rewarded with small gifts.

Scenario 7: Green Moment as part of team building outside the office

During a team-building trip or joint volunteering activity (e.g. cleaning up the neighbourhood, planting trees), use the cards as an interlude. During the break, ask participants to draw cards and share their reflections. This exercise is a great way to combine practical action with reflection on everyday eco-friendly habits.

Scenario 8: Green wall with Green Moment cards

During the company’s environmental day, create a ‘green wall’ in the office space. Place Green Moment cards on it and ask employees to stick their answers on sticky notes. The result: a visual map of ideas and reflections from the entire company.

Scenario 9: Green Moment – eco-friendly lottery

During eco-friendly month, one GM card is drawn every day (e.g. by the HR or EHS department) and sent out by email/Slack/Teams. Employees have 24 hours to respond. The most interesting answers are rewarded with small ‘green gifts’ (e.g. a reusable water bottle, a potted plant). Result: regular employee engagement throughout the month.

Scenario 10: Green Moment in toolbox talks / 5 minutes for the environment

Green Moment cards are perfect for use during short team meetings, known as toolbox talks, or ‘5 minutes for the environment’. This is a practical method for regularly incorporating the topic of ecology into the daily routine of production teams. The whole process takes only a few minutes, but it can effectively engage employees and encourage them to reflect on their own habits and work environment.

The meeting begins with a short introduction. The foreman/leader/master draws one Green Moment card and reads it aloud to all participants. Then the participants share their observations. The discussion lasts a few minutes – it can be a free exchange of opinions among the whole group or a statement by one designated person, which the rest supplement with their own experiences.
